Chester mint silver Shilling of William III dated 1696. Obverse: first laureate and draped bust of the king, facing right by John Roettier. Legend around: ‘GVLLELMVS · III · DEI · GRA ·’. ‘C’ below for the mint of Chester, active October 1696 to June 1698, opened to handle a large-scale recoinage of silver coins alongside other provincial mints. Reverse: crowned shields of arms, arranged cruciform with lion of the House of Orange-Nassau in the centre. Date - 1696 - divided by crown, legend reads: ‘MAG · | BR · FRA · | ET · HIB · | REX ·’. William came to the English and Scottish thrones following the Glorious Revolution of 1688 which resulted in the coronations of him and his wife, Mary II. He ruled alone after her death in 1694.
