Well preserved tin issue Farthing of King Charles II, dated 1684. Obverse: left-facing laureate cuirassed head and shoulders bust of Charles II, surrounded by the legend ‘CAROLVS · A · CAROLO’. Copper plug visible to cheek of the portrait. Reverse: Britannia seated on a globe with a shield at her side, holding a spear. ‘BRITAN NIA’ around. The rim on each side is toothed while the edge features raised lettering that reads ‘NVMMORVM * FAMVLVS · 1684 ·’. (Translation: ‘The servant of the coinage’) with a single five-pointed mullet stop. This coin weighs 5.6 grams and has a diameter of 23.5 millimetres. The design of this unusual English coin was based on earlier copper issues. It was supposedly struck in tin to bolster domestic tin mining. Since the value of the tin used to make the coin was less than the face value of the coin, a copper plug was added to put off forgers looking to profit from counterfeits. The choice of metal means these are generally found in poor condition with high-grade examples much sought-after. Grade: GVF - Some minor surface corrosion as common with tin, otherwise strong details and excellent edge lettering: very rare. References: S 3395, Peck 536.
