Remarkable Sir Winston Churchill medal struck in 143.3 grams of 22-carat gold. A number of Churchill medals were struck in 1965, marking the great statesman's passing at the age of 90. The life and legacy of the wartime Prime Minister was commemorated with the largest state funeral in UK history, attended by representatives from 120 countries. This high-relief medal features a souped bust of Churchill, facing half left, wearing a bowtie. The text around reads 'RT. HON SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL K.G. O.M. C.H. M.P.' with dates below: '1874-1965'. It was commissioned by A Edward Jones, a notable, family firm of silversmiths, based in Birmingham. The back of this uniface medal bears their 'AEJ' stamp as well as the numerals '336/500', indicating the small number that were produced. Hallmarks confirm the 22-carat composition. The medal measures 58 millimetres in diameter and comes without its original case. The portrait - attributed to J Hazeldine - is a unique and instantly recognisable image of Churchill, perfectly preserved on this rarely seen and highly-collectable medal.
