Issued by the Royal Mint to commemorate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897, this small 24-carat gold medal honours the first British monarch to celebrate sixty years on the throne. Although numerous medals were produced for the Diamond Jubilee, the official Royal Mint issues remain the most coveted for their artistry and historic significance. Designed by George William de Saulles and based on portraits by William Wyon and Thomas Brock, the medal presents both youthful and mature effigies of Victoria inspired by her coinage. This desirable 26 millimetre edition is a key addition to any collection of UK gold medals and is offered in high grade.

Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee

Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897 marked the 60th year of her reign and was celebrated across Britain and the Empire with grand processions, public festivities and the sale of many mass-produced souvenirs, including medals.

Young Head 1837 Portrait

One side of this medal shows a youthful portrait of Victoria, modelled on William Wyon's first coin portrait with a laurel branch and '1837' below. It is inscribed 'LONGITVDO DIERVM IN DEXTERA EIVS ET IN SINISTRA GLORIA' ('length of days in her right hand, and glory in her left').

Old Veiled Head 1897 Effigy

The other side, like the first, was engraved by George William de Saulles, inspired, in this instance, by Sir Thomas Brock's Widowed Head effigy with the words 'VICTORIA ANNVM REGNI SEXAGESIMVM FELICITER CLAVDIT XX IVN · MDCCCXCVII ·' around.

The Official Royal Mint Medal

Many different medals were issued to celebrate Victoria's record-breaking 1897 Diamond Jubilee, but this official Royal Mint issue, struck in 13 grams of 24-carat gold and measuring 26 millimetres, is among the most sought after.
