Official copper medal struck to celebrate the coronation of George IV in 1821, following the death of his father George III the previous year. The superb high relief obverse portrait of George IV is the work of the Italian engraver Benedetto Pistrucci. We know this laureate effigy to be based on sittings and it is similar to the second portrait seen on George’s currency (though perhaps more flattering). The reverse, also by Pistrucci, bears a classically inspired image of George’s coronation. He is crowned by the winged Roman goddess Victoria and attended by Britannia, Hibernia and Scotia.
