Crux type penny of Aethelred II also known as Æthelred the Unready (ruled 978 to 1013 and again 1014 to 1016). This coin was struck at the mint of Rochester by the moneyer Brihtmaer. The obverse shows a left facing bust of Aethelred, robed and holding a trefoil topped sceptre, the portrait enclosed within a circle. The legend identifies the monarch as king of the English. The reverse features a voided short cross within a circle with a pellet in the centre, the quarters created by the cross bearing the letters C R U X. This lettering gives this type its name. Crux pennies are probably the largest issue of coinage from Aethelreds reign. Most were minted in Lincoln, Winchester, London and York. This one was struck at the mint of Rochester, a major mint in the 9th century among the more than 70 in operation during the reign of Aethelred, according to North. The reverse legend attributes the coin to the moneyer Brihtmaer, rendered ‘BERHTMERH’ here. Aethelred II’s epithet - ‘The Unready’ - suggests he was ill advised and one ill advised decision might be said to be paying off Viking raiders. Surviving coinage shows ‘peck marks’ from Viking bankers testing metal quality with a knife. 1.28 grams, 19.2 millimetres. Grade: F - Dark patina, some die cracks, with peck marks - somewhat crimped - Fine. Spink 1148.
