Commonwealth hammered silver Shilling, dated 1653. Obverse: shield with cross of St George within wreath of palm and laurels. The branches denote Parliamentarian victory and the peace wrought by it. The legend, in English, reads, simply: ‘· THE COMMONWEALTH OF ENGLAND ·’. A clear sun mint mark appears above, used on interregnum hammered silver coinage until the protectorship of Richard Cromwell. Reverse: arms of the Commonwealth of England. Pair of shields of arms with St George’s cross to left and Irish harp to the right, enclosed within a beaded circle. ‘·XII·’ appears above the shields , indicating the value of this coin (12 Pence). At the top, the date - 1655 - and around, the words ‘GOD · WITH · VS’. This coin weighs 5.7 grams and has a diameter of 30.9 millimetres. Grade: NVF - Attractive, even mid-grey tone with clear legends and details approaching Very Fine, reverse better. S 3217, ESC 124.
