Silver hammered Commonwealth Shilling dated 1553 with hole. Obverse: shield with cross of St George within wreath of palm and laurels. The branches denote Parliamentarian victory and the peace wrought by it. The legend, in English, reads, simply: ‘· THE COMMONWEALTH OF ENGLAND ·’. A clear sun mint mark appears above, used on interregnum hammered silver coinage until the protectorship of Richard Cromwell. Reverse: arms of the Commonwealth of England. Pair of shields of arms with St George’s cross to left and Irish harp to the right, enclosed within a beaded circle. ‘·XII·’ appears above the shields , indicating the value of this coin (12 Pence). At the top, the date - 1655 - and around, the words ‘GOD · WITH · VS’. Weight 5.73 grams. Diameter: 30.8 millimetres. Grade: GF - Slightly short on flan near date and holed through obverse mint mark. S 3217, ESC 124.
