Buy a 1645 Charles I Hammered Silver Halfcrown 3a3 Tower Mint MM Eye

from
£390.00
A collectable hammered silver Halfcrown of Charles the First, with an Eye mintmark visible on both sides. The Eye indicates that this coin was struck in the year 1645 at the Tower mint of London in the midst of the first English Civil War. Parliamentarian forces had seized control of the Tower mint in 1642 but its presses continued to produce coinage in the name of the king. This Halfcrown shows Charles I, armoured and on horseback, holding a sword upright, his cloak flowing from his shoulders behind him. The reverse features a large oval shield of arms, garnished with scrolls. Type 3a3: no ground beneath horse, cruder workmanship. A fascinating piece. Spink 2778, North 2213.
