£245.00
1645-1646 hammered silver Charles I Shilling, struck at the Tower mint under Parliament. Obverse: sixth large ‘Briot’s’ bust, type 4.4. Portrait of the king facing left with stellate lace collar and double arched crown. ‘XII’ behind for value: 12 Pence. Beaded border separating portrait from legend which (though hard to read here) runs: ‘CAROLVS · D .' G .' MAG .' BRI .' FRA .' ET HI .' REX’. Mint mark: sun. Reverse: square-topped shield of royal arms, quartered by cross moline within beaded circle. Legend: ‘· CHRISTO · AVSPICE · REGNO ·’. Mint mark appears as sun (1645-1646) over eye (1645). Parliament seized control of the Tower mint in 1642 and retained control of London through the rest of the civil conflict while continuing to mint coinage in the kings name until his execution in 1649. This coin weighs 6.34 grams and has a diameter of 31.00 millimetres. Grade: NVF - Light tone, flan a little irregular with flan crack but good bust details: near Very Fine. S 2800, North 2232.
