from
£280.00
Silver Shilling of Charles I with Bell mint mark to both sides indicating that this coin was struck at the Tower mint in either 1634 or 1635. The obverse features a crowed left facing portrait - group D, fourth bust - with XII behind for twelve Pence. There is no inner circle that separates the portrait from the legend as on most other Charles I Shillings. The reverse features a round, garnished shield of royal arms, quartered to represent England, France, Scotland and Ireland. The legend reads 'CHRISTO AVSPICE REGNO' which translates to 'I rule under the auspices of Christ', demonstrating his belief in the divine right of kings. At this point in his reign Gods was the only authority Charles was ruling under - he certainly wasn't calling parliaments. Between this, raising taxes and the perception that he was pro-Catholic, Charles was heading for civil conflict that would erupt first with the Bishops Wars in 1639 and later before the war expanded out across the three kingdoms, eventually resulting in Charles' imprisonment and execution. This Shilling weighs 6.06 grams and has a diameter of 30.2 millimetres. Grade: GF - Good flan, legends and bust details all round: good Fine. Spink 2791, North 2225.
