from
£80.00
Hammered silver Halfgroat of Charles I with rare single dot mint mark to obverse. Struck at the Tower mint under under royalist control. The obverse features the fourth crowned bust of the king - type 3a2-3 - facing left with numerals for denomination behind (‘II’ for Twopence). This is surrounded by a beaded circle. The mint mark is a round circle or dot - not one we have seen before. The reverse features a garnished shield of royal arms, also within a beaded circle, with a ‘triangle in circle’ mint mark above. If we date this coin using this mint mark, rather than the mysterious dot, then we can narrow down when this coin was struck to the final years that Charles’ forces controlled the London mint or just afterwards: 1641 to 1643. Legend reads ‘· IVSTITIA · THRONVM · FIRMAT. Rough translation: Justice consolidates the throne. Topical! Weight: 1.06 grams, diameter: 17.1 millimetres. Grade: VG/VF - Full flan, light even tone, obverse bust worn but reverse much better. Spink 2832.
