from
£185.00
A collectable hammered silver Shilling of king Charles the First with a Triangle in Circle mint mark to both sides. This tells us that this coin was struck in London between the years 1641 to 1642 while the Tower mint remained under royalist control. In 1642 Parliament would seize control of the Tower mint though its presses continued to produce coinage in the name of the king. The obverse of this piece features the sixth large bust - known as ‘Briot’s bust’ - type 4.4, facing left wearing a double arched crown. The roman numerals ‘XII’ appear behind the head, indicating a value of 12 Pence or one Shilling. The reverse displays a square topped shield, quartered by a cross moline. Shillings of this type are relatively common in lower grades but hard to find with the strong details this example shows. Spink 2799.
