Gold Quarter Laurel of James I: a denomination only issued during his third and final coinage: 1619-1625. The obverse shows a large portrait of James, facing left, his laurels tied with two loose ends at his neck. A mark of value - a ‘V’ appears in the field behind. A Full Laurel was worth 20 Shillings, a Quarter Laurel five. The legend begins with a rose mint mark, narrowing down the date to 1620-1621. Legend: ‘JACOBVS D:G:MAG:BRI:FRA:ETHIB:REX’. The reverse features a crowned, squared topped shield of royal arms, quartered by a cross with decorative terminals, cutting through a beaded circle. Legend around: ‘HENRIC | VS . ROSAS | REGINA (rose) | JACOBVS’. 2.18 grams, 20 millimetres. Grade: VF - Slightly irregular flan with clear details, small insignificant obverse scratch. Spink 2642, North 2118.

Reverse

Crowned, square topped shield of royal arms, quartered by a cross with decorative terminals which break the enclosing beaded circle. Legend, divided by cross: 'HENRIC | VS . ROSAS | REGINA | JACOBVS'. Rose mint mark after 'REGINA'.

Grade

VF - Slightly irregular flan with clear details, small insignificant obverse scratch.
