Buy a 1609-1610 James I Hammered Silver Shilling Fifth Bust MM Key

from
£440.00
A sought-after hammered silver Shilling of king James the First with the scarcer Key mint mark. This indicates that this coin was struck in 1609 or 1610 at the Tower mint, in London. From James’ second issue of coinage (1604 to 1619), the obverse features the fifth bust of the king, facing right, distinguished by somewhat longer hair behind the ear and the single arched crown. The reverse shows a large shield of royal arms within a beaded circle. James I’s accession to the English throne in 1603 brought about the union of the English and Scottish crowns, reflected in his arms and the reverse legend. Translated, this reads ‘What God has joined together let no man put asunder’. Ex Baldwins, ticket included. Spink 2656, North 2101.
