£399.00
Second coinage hammered silver Shilling of King James I with rose mint mark. Obverse: third, right-facing bust of the King with squared off beard. James shown crowned wearing armour and a ruff with 'XII' behind for value (12 pence). Clear rose mint mark to top with legend reading: 'IACOBVS · D .' G .' MAG .' BRIT .' FRA .' ET · HIB .' REX ·'. The mint mark dates this coin to 1605-1606, early in James' reign. Reverse:plain quartered shield of royal arms within a beaded circle. Rose mint mark before legend that reads: 'QVÆ · DEVS · CONIVNXIT · NEMO · SEPARET ·'. Translation: 'Let no-one separate what the Lord has joined together'. James VI of Scotland became King of England in 1603, reigning as James I. His accession created a personal union between the crowns of the two nations that James aimed to extend into a formal unification of the English and Scottish parliaments. He was ultimately unsuccessful in this endeavour but the legends on his coinage, including this silver Shilling, are a testament to his efforts. This coin weighs 6.10 grams and has a diameter of 29.4 millimetres. Grade: VF - Good flan and attractive tone, strong details and no issues. References: S 2654.
