£190.00
A hammered silver Sixpence of king James the First, struck in London in 1604 with a lis mint mark clearly visible on both sides. The obverse features the crowned, right-facing, third bust of James I, identified by a square cut beard. ‘VI’ appears behind his head, representing the denomination. The reverse shows the the date above a large shield of royal arms, as used by James outside Scotland from his accession to the English throne in 1603 until his death in 1625. At the time this coin was minted James was working, ultimately unsuccessfully, to expand the union of the crowns of England and Scotland into the sort of unified Kingdom that would be created just over a century later with the Acts of Union. A very well struck example. Spink 2657.
