A scarcer date hammered silver Sixpence of Queen Elizabeth the First from her sixth issue coinage, dated 1589. The obverse shows the crowned bust type 6b of Elizabeth I, facing left with the Tudor rose behind. The reverse features a cross quartering a shield of royal arms, representing England and France, with the date 1589 and a Crescent mint mark (in use between 1587 and 1589). The fleur-de-lis on the arms - speaking to Elizabeth’s claim to the French throne - are interesting in this context. In 1589 Elizabeth was sending military support to back the succession of Henry IV of France, in defiance of the Catholic League and Phillip II of Spain. An interesting addition to any collection.
