A collectable hammered silver Threepence of Queen Elizabeth the First with a Latin Cross mint mark and the date 1580 to the reverse. This example, struck at the Tower mint, comes from Elizabeth I’s fifth issue (1578-1582). The obverse features the left-facing crowned bust of the queen with ear and earring showing and a rose behind her head. The reverse shows a shield of royal arms, quartered by a long cross. The date, divided by the cross, appears above the shield. The Threepence coin had first been struck during the reign of Elizabeth’s half-brother, Edward VI and would fall out of use during the reign of her successor, James VI and I. Spink 2573.
