A hammered silver Sixpence of Queen Elizabeth the First with a Greek Cross mint mark, dated 1578 with 8 over 7. From the Queen’s fifth issue of coinage. The obverse features a 5a crowned bust of Elizabeth I, facing left with a Tudor rose behind inside a beaded circle. The reverse shows a long cross fourchee, quartering a shield of arms with the date above. The arms feature English lions and French fleur-de-lis, symbolising Elizabeth’s claim to the French throne. Her successor, James I would add symbols of Scotland and Ireland. A collectible Elizabethan piece with an interesting date and mintmark. Spink 2572.
