£199.00
An attractive hammered silver Groat of Queen Elizabeth the First with a Martlet mint mark, indicating that this coin was struck in the year 1560 or 1561 at the Tower mint in London. Martlets are a mythological bird that never roosts. The obverse features a crowned bust of Elizabeth I, facing left, from her second issue coinage. The reverse shows the fourchee long cross, quartering a shield of arms. Elizabeth’s coinage is very popular with collectors due to the large number of denominations, issues and mint marks over certain dates. This coin would make a good addition to such a collection. Spink 2556.
