Scarce 1554 English hammered silver Sixpence of King Philip II and Queen Mary I. Obverse: facing double busts of Philip and Mary with large crown above. The date - 1554 - appears above, divided by the crown. The legend reads 'PHILIP · ET · MARIA · D · G · R · ANG · FR · NEAP · PR · HISP ·'. Translation: 'Philip and Mary by the Grace of God King and Queen of England, France and Naples, Prince and Princess of Spain'. Beaded detail to edge. Reverse: garnished shield with crown above. 'VI' either side of crown for denomination. Shield bears the royals arms of Spain and England, representing both monarchs. The legend reads 'POSVIMVS · DEVN · ADIVTOREM · NOSTRVM ·'. More commonly 'DEVM'. Translation: 'We have made God our guide'. Shillings and Sixpences issued after Queen Mary's 1554 marriage to Philip of Spain bear these fascinating facing portraits of the two monarchs. Mary died in 1558 with the English throne passing to her younger sister, Elizabeth I. Weight: 2.94 grams. Diameter: 26.3 millimetres.
