Silver 1551 Crown of Edward VI with Tun mint mark and possible overdate. This coin comes from Edward’s fine silver issue which presents such a marked difference to his earlier debased coinage. Edward’s regency council continued the policy of the boy king’s farther, Henry VIII, which had been to radically reduce the amount of precious metals in his gold and silver issues. In 1548 an attempt was made to improve the state of the gold coinage with a comparable improvement in silver denominations beginning in 1551. With the restored fineness came new denominations, including the silver Crown, first struck in this brief reign and minted for another four centuries with a face value of five Shillings. Under all subsequent English, later British monarchs, minus Mary I. This Crown, struck in the first year of issue, has an obverse featuring a the king on horseback, rich with detail, riding right. The date appears below the horse with the final digit possible overstruck. The tun mint mark is particularly clear. The reverse features a shield of Royal Arms, quartered by a long cross fourchée, cutting through a linear circle and a beaded circle. This example weighs 31.12 grams and has a diameter of 41.4 millimetres. Grade: AVF - A good solid coin with clear details, reverse slightly better: Approaching Very Fine. Spink 2578.
