Sovereign type penny of King Henry VIII, struck at the mint of Durham during the tenure of Thomas Wolsey as Bishop. The obverse shows the seated figure of the King, his head and crown protruding through a beaded circle that otherwise encloses the enthroned portrait. The legend here may be deciphered as ‘H ’x D ’x G ’x ROSA · SIE x SPIA ’’. Mint mark: crescent. The reverse features a long cross fourchée, quartering a shield of royal arms with the letters ’T’ and ‘W’ either side, enclosed within a beaded circle. A cardianal’s hat appears below. The legend around reads: ‘CIVI | TAS | DVR | RAM’. Wolsey became Archbishop of Durham in 1523. He was already Cardinal Archbishop of York, wielding great power in both ecclesiastical affairs as well as secular ones: he was also Henry VIII’s Lord Chancellor. He fell out of favour when he failed to arrange the annulment of the King’s marriage to Catherine of Aragon and died in 1530 under charges of treason. These Pennies - also struck in London, Canterbury and York are referred to as ‘Sovereign’ pennies for the similarity of the obverse portrait to that seen on the large gold coins struck in this era, albeit on a different scale. This tiny coin weighs 0.68 grams and has a diameter of just 15.00 millimetres. Grade: VF - Light even tone, slightly oval flan with excellent clear details bot sides for Very Fine. References: S 2352.
