£120.00
Class III facing bust issue Halfgroat of King Henry VII, struck in the 1490s at the mint of Canterbury. Obverse: crowned, forward-facing portrait of the King within a treasure of arcs and a beaded circle. Legend: ‘HENRIC DI GRA REX ANGL Z F’. Reverse: Long cross fourchée, quartering concentric circles. Three pellets in each segment of a central circle. Middle ring: ‘CIVI | TAS | CAN | TOR’. The edge of what is probably a tun initial mark is just visible around the clipped edge of a legend that reads: ‘POSVI | DEV’A | DIVITO |EMEV’. These type c ‘King and Archbishop’ Canterbury Halfgroats do not feature the ‘M’ in the centre like those issued under the sole authority of Archbishop Morton and lacks the stops in the legend. Morton returned to England following a period of exile soon after Henry VII’s victory at the Battle of Bosworth field. He was quickly appointed Lord Chancellor and, in 1486, made Archbishop of Canterbury. He had already had a long ecclesiastical and political career, serving under Edward IV. He was made a Cardinal in 1493. The coins minted under his authority in Canterbury all feature a tun or barrel mint mark, a pun on his name (‘more tuns’). This motif is also featured on his arms and is seen on a monument to Archbishop Moreton in the crypt of Canterbury Cathedral. Weight: 1.40 grams. Diameter: 18.50 millimetres. Grade: AVF - Dark tone, short on flan (as is common with this issue), bold bust details: approaching Very Fine. References: S 2211, N 1712.
