Sovereign type hammered silver Penny of Henry VII, struck at the mint of York under Archbishop Rotherham. Obverse: full-length enthroned figure of the king holding orb and sceptre, crown cutting through beaded border. Two pillars between the legs of the throne. Legend reads: ‘hEnRIC DI GRA REX ANG’. Reverse: shield of royal arms with pair of keys below in front of a long cross fourchée, extending through beaded border and dividing legend which reads: ‘CIVI | TAS | EBO | RACI’. Thomas Rotherham - whose association with this issue is confirmed by the keys - was Archbishop of York from 1480 until his death in 1500 though he also served as Lord Chancellor, first under Edward IV and then again, briefly, in the reign of Henry VII. He spent some time in the Tower of London after siding with the dowager queen Elizabeth Woodville, following her husbands death. Weight: 0.66 grams, diameter: 15.5 millimetres.
