A scarce ‘Dubbele Groot’ or Double Groat of Charles the Bold, struck at the mint of Bruges. The obverse features the quartered arms of the House of Valois-Burgundy, as used between 1419 and 1482. This dynasty ruled the Duchy of Burgundy (comprising territories largely located in modern France) from the the late fourteenth to the late fifteenth century. Charles I, nicknamed ‘le Hardi’ or ‘der Kühne' (‘the Bold’) or ‘le Téméraire’ (‘the Reckless’) was Duke of Burgundy from 1467 to his death in 1477. The reverse shows a long cross with decorated shoulders and a lis at the centre. In the angles are a pair of lis and a pair of rampant lions. These ‘lowland’ hammered coins are a complicated but rewarding series with examples in good grade with a full flan - like this one - hard to find.
