A collectable silver hammered Halfpenny of king Edward the Fourth from the heavy coinage issue of his first reign (1461 to 1464). The very clear Rose mint mark indicates that this coin was struck at the tower mint in London. The obverse features the front facing crowned bust of Edward IV with two saltires or crosses either side of his neck. The reverse shows a long cross with three pellets in each quarter. Edward was a central figure in the Wars of the Roses, a series of civil wars, fought between the houses of York and Lancaster. This coin was minted not long after the Yorkist Edward deposed Henry VI and took his throne. Spink 1991, North 1545.
