Flemish imitation of an English gold Noble, struck in the name of Philip the Good (Philip le Bon, Philip III), Duke of Burgundy from 1419 to 1467. Obverse features figure standing in a ship at sea, holding a sword and a shield bearing the arms of the dukes of Burgundy with the lion rampant sable of Flanders in the centre. Fleurs appear on the side of the ship, a lion rampant on the bow and a crown at the stern which cuts through the beaded circle which encloses the design. The legend around reads ‘PHS xx DEI xx GRA xx DVX xx BVRG xx COMES xx Z xx DNS xx FLAND’ referencing Philip’s role as both Duke of Burgundy and Count of Flanders. The reverse features an ornate cross with a rose and the centre, its limbs terminating in lis with crowns over lions in the angles. The design is enclosed by a beaded and linear tressure with lis in the angles. Legend around: ‘IHC xx AVTEM xx TRADSIEDS xx PER xx MEDIVM xx ILLORVM xx IBAT’. 6.86 grams of 22 carat gold and a diameter of 34.8 millimetres. Grade: VF - Full flan and weight, minor historical crease damage with odd insignificant scratches. Bright with good legends and details for a grade of very fine. Boudeau 2255.

Grade

VF - Full flan and weight, minor historical crease damage with odd insignificant scratches. Bright with good legends and details for a grade of very fine.
