Hammered silver Penny of Edward III, struck at the ecclesiastical mint of York under Archbishop Thoresby. Obverse: facing crowned portrait of the king within a beaded circle. Quatrefoil on breast and before legend which reads: ‘EDWARDVS REX ANGLI +’. Reverse: long cross quartering beaded circle with quatrefoil in the centre. Three pellets in each angle. Legend around reads: ‘CIVI | TAS | EBO | RACI’. Thoresby held important court appointments including a period as Lord Chancellor of England, before and after he was elected Archbishop of York in 1352, appointed by both Edward III and Pope Clement VI. He undertook significant building work at York Minister during his tenure as Archbishop which lasted until his death in 1373. This coin weighs 1.18 grams and has a diameter of 18.2 millimetres. Grade: VF - Dark tone, a little short on flan and some weakness to legend but bust attractive and strong for around Very Fine. S 1631, North 1269.
