A collectable hammered silver Penny of king Edward the Third struck at the Tower mint in London. This coin is from Edward III’s third or ‘Florin’ issue, struck between 1344 and 1351. The obverse shows the crowned, forward-facing bust of the king with bushy hair. A Lombardic style ‘N’ appears in the legend (as opposed to a Roman or Reversed N). Class 1 or XVI (Spink 1543). The reverse shows a typical long cross with three pellets in the quarters and lettering for the city and the mint. This coin was minted in an eventful decade, coloured by English ascendancy in the first phase of the Hundred Years War and the ravages of the Black Death which hit British shores in 1348.
