£440.00
King Cnut short cross Penny, struck at York by the moneyer Wulfnod. The obverse features a draped left facing portrait, wearing a diadem and holding a sceptre, topped with a lis. The portrait extends to the edge of the coin which has a beaded detail. The legend identifies Cnut as monarch. The reverse gives this type its name and features a voided short cross with an annulet in the centre within a linear circle. The reverse legend reads 'PVLNOD ON EOFER' for the moneyer Wulfnoth and the mint of York. Short cross Canute Pennies date from the later portion of Canute's reign which began in 1016 when he became undisputed king of England. This type was being minted from about 1029 through to the time of his death in 1035 or just afterwards. By this point Cnut or Canute was king of England, Denmark (1018) and Norway (1028) uniting the three kingdoms in what was referred to as the North Sea Empire. The short cross type is one of three substantive stypes of Pennies seen in Cnut's reign, alongside 'Quatrefoil' (c1017-1023) and 'Pointed Helment' (c1024-1030), both minted earlier. Weight: 1.14 grams. Diameter: 17.4 millimetres. Grade: GF - Good flan, clear details and legends, some minor scratches typical of being in the ground, a little uneven - Good Fine. Spink 1159, BMC XVI.
