First Releases 2021 Alfred The Great gold proof Five Pound coin, graded PF 70 Ultra Cameo by NGC. This Royal Mint collectors coin was issued to celebrate the achievements of legendary Anglo-Saxon King, Alfred the Great. Alfred became King of the West Saxons in 871 - 1,150 years ago. In defending his kingdom from invading Vikings he became the dominant ruler in England. Alfred is remembered for his learning, as well as his significant military and administrative reforms. Today, he's one of just two English monarchs referred to as 'the Great'. One of the most famous artefacts of Alfred's reign is the so-called 'Alfred Jewel, a remarkable example of 9th century goldsmithing which can be seen at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. The jewel inspired the eye-catching design on the reverse of this commemorative Five Pound piece, created by John Berghdahl. This is paired with Jody Clark's fifth and final portrait of Queen Elizabeth II: another remarkable monarch. Struck in 22 carat gold, this coin has a total mass of 39.94 grams and an actual gold weight of 36.61 grams. The fine proof finish features mirrored surfaces and frosted devices. Just 160 of these Alfred The Great gold £5 coin were issued by The Royal Mint and this one - among the first to be independently graded - comes sealed in its Numismatic Guaranty Company holder.
