One of just 284 issued! This 22-carat gold proof 2013 Golden Guinea Two Pound coin from The Royal Mint has been graded PF 70 Ultra Cameo, indicating that this limited edition piece has a flawless finish. It was issued by The Royal Mint to mark the 350th anniversary of the British Guinea. First minted in 1663 during the reign of Charles II, the gold Guinea was worth to Twenty Shillings, although this fluctuated with the price of gold. Its name was inspired by the Guinea coast in Africa, where the gold used to make these coins originated. From 1663 until the last Guineas were minted in 1813, the design remained relatively stable, featuring the monarch’s head on the obverse, and a version of the royal shield of arms on the reverse. One highly-recognisable design was the ‘Spade Guinea’ used from 1787 and featuring a flat-topped, pointed shield of arms. It is this design that artist Anthony Smith was inspired by for this anniversary coin. Around the Royal Arms is a legend reading ‘ANNIVERSARY OF THE GOLDEN GUINEA 2013’. The edge inscription is taken from a poem by nineteenth-century poet Stephen Kemble: ‘WHAT IS A GUINEA? ’TIS A SPLENDID THING’. The obverse shows Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, the fourth such effigy used on her coinage. This £2 is struck in 15.98 grams of 916.7 gold and has a diameter of 28.40 millimetres. We’ll send this coin sealed in its Numismatic Guaranty Holder, perfect to display and admire.
