Dual dated gold proof 1992-1993 50ps graded PF 70 Ultra Cameo by NGC. This is one of the first commemorative Fifty Pence pieces ever issued by The Royal Mint and comes from a limited edition presentation of just 1,864. It was issued to celebrate 25 years since the UK’s entrance into the European Economic Community, an organisation formed to foster economic integration that later became part of the European Union. This 50p also marks the 6-month term that the UK held the presidency of the EEC’s Council of Ministers. This coin’s reverse was designed by Mary Milner Dickens and features a conference table and twelve chairs for each of the European Communities Ministers. The chair at the head of the table is marked ‘UK’ in honour of the presidency. The European Community symbol of twelve stars is overlaid across the table, along with the dates 1992 and 1993 making this an unusual outlier among modern British coins. The obverse features Raphael Maklouf’s third definitive portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. This 50 Pence conforms to the old specification for these coins and is both heavier and larger than those you’ll find in your change today. It’s struck in 26.32 grams of 22-carat gold, has a diameter of 30.00-millimetre diameter and boasts a fine proof finish, verified by the flawless grade from the Numismatic Guaranty Company. An appealing addition to any serious collection of modern UK proof coins.
