NGC graded gold Rhodesian 10 Shilling coin, dated 1966. Obverse: Arnold Machin’s second definitive coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, facing right and wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara. The legend reads: ‘ELIZABETH THE SECOND’. Reverse: sable antelope, facing left and dividing date: 1966. ‘RHODESIA’ above and ‘TEN SHILLINGS’ below. Design signed ’T.S.’ for the South African medallist Thomas Sasseen. This 10 Shilling coin would originally have been part of a three piece set, produced by the South African Mint for the new Rhodesian national bank, not long after the white separatist minority government had declared independence in November 1965. Following a 15-year guerrilla war, Rhodesia would emerge as the Republic of Zimbabwe in 1980. Only 5,000 of these proof 10s gold coins were issued in 1966. They have the same specifications as a British gold Half Sovereign. The coin is composed of 3.99 grams of 22 carat (916.7) gold, equating to an actual gold weight of 3.99 grams (0.1176 troy ounces). The diameter of this piece is 19.30 millimetres and it features a milled edge. This example has been graded PF 66 by the Numismatic Guaranty Company. It comes sealed in its standard brown label holder. Certificate number: 6322186-020.
