NGC graded British gold Half Sovereign, issued in 1937 to celebrate the first coinage of King George VI. George came to the throne unexpectedly following the abdication of his elder brother, Edward VII. He choose the regnal name George to emphasis continuity with his father, George V, who died in 1936. George VI was the father of Queen Elizabeth II and the grandfather of King Charles III. Just 5,001 of these coins were struck, originally offered in specimen sets alongside a 1937 ‘full’ Sovereign, Double Sovereign and Five Sovereign, all struck with a fine proof finish in 22 carat gold. These would be the only gold coins issued during George VI’s reign. 1937 Half Sovereigns show Humphrey Paget’s left-facing portrait bust of the King, designed for his first coinage and used through to his death in 1952. The reverse shows the instantly recognisable image of Saint George on horseback wearing a classical helmet, his cloak flowing out behind him. He points his sword at a fearsome dragon, trampled beneath his steed’s hooves. This depiction of England’s patron saint was designed in 1817 for the first modern Sovereigns by Benedetto Pistrucci. This 1937 coins has been independently graded PF 65 by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation and comes sealed in its holder. It’s a key addition to any collection of 20th century Sovereigns.
