A collectable silver Florin of Queen Victoria, dated 1885. This is known as the ‘Gothic’ type due to the range of gothic revival details found in the design which is the work of Royal Mint Chief engraver William Wyon. The obverse features an intricate, crowned portrait of Victoria, facing left (ESC Bust D). This type - E2 (old ESC B8) - has no die number or engravers initials below the bust and a border with 43 arcs and 33 trefoils. The date is displayed in roman numerals: ‘mdccclxxxv’. The reverse shows crowned cruciform shields of royal arms around a central floriated cross. National flower emblems (roses, thistles and shamrocks) appear in the angles, all within a circle. This was designed by William Dyce but engraved by William Wyon. The gothic florin has many types and variations making it a fascinating series to study and collect. Spink 3900.
