Victorian silver Shilling, dated 1859 and graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation. Obverse shows the second type A3 ‘Young Head’ of Queen Victoria, facing left, her hair bound back with two plain bands. The artist behind the original portrait was William Wyon though his initials are not present. The legend around reads: 'VICTORIA DEI GRATIA BRITANNIAR: REG: F: D:'. The reverse has the words ‘ONE SHILLING’ in the centre, surrounded by branches of oak and laurel leaves, tied at the bottom. A crown appears above and the date below: 1859. The reverse engraver was Jean Baptiste Merlen. In this year, workers at the Royal Mint in London would have heard the chimes of Big Ben for the first time. The bell was installed as part of the reconstruction of the Palace of Westminster that began in 1840, undertaken by Charles Barry and Augustus Pugin. This milled silver Shilling weighs 5.66 grams and has a diameter of 23.5 millimetres. It’s been graded MS 61 by NGC and comes sealed in its holder (code: 6029966-012). References: S 3904, Davies 879.
