This is one of two Victoria Cross coins issued in 2006 to mark 150 years since the medal was introduced by Queen Victoria. Awarded for 'conspicuous bravery …. in the presence of the enemy,' The Victoria Cross is the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. The first Victoria Crosses were presented to veterans of the Crimean War with only a handful awarded since the Second World War. The medal itself is shaped like a cross and features a lion standing on top of a crown. This commemorative Fifty Pence depicts the back and front of the medal, with the obverse of the coin featuring Ian Rank-Broadley's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. This pre-owned Royal Mint collectors coin is supplied in the original presentation case with a numbered certificate of authenticity enclosed.

The front of the medal shows the iconic lion and crown design with the back inscribed with the back inscribed with the date that Queen Victoria issued the royal warrant that authorised the Victoria Cross: '29. JAN 1856.'. Below are the words 'VC' and 'FIFTY PENCE'.
