An extremely rare early Anglo-Saxon gold Thrymsa of the kingdom of Kent from a class known as the post-Crondall type after the famous hoard. This coin was likely struck during the reign of King Eorcenberht who ruled the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Kent between the years 655 and 675 AD. Bede tells us he was the first Christina king in Britain. These coins are known as the ‘two emperors’ type due to the pair of facing heads seen on the reverse. These are surmounted by a figure identified as either Victory or and angel. A circular ornament appears below. The obverse shows a stylised cuirassed bust wearing a pearl diadem, facing right, with pseudo lettering around. These Tremissis or Tremis after the late Roman coins which influenced them. A fascinating and important piece. 1.24 grams of debased gold. XRF reading: 35.7% Au 63.1% Ag. Approximate diameter: 12.2 millimetres. Grade: EF - Minor surface marks, reverse slightly off centre but boldly struck: around Extremely Fine. Spink 767.
