Buy a 661-663 Byzantine Empire Constans II And Constantine IV Gold Solidus

from
£740.00
A collectable and fascinating gold Solidus, issued jointly by Byzantine rulers Constans the Second and Constantine the Fourth. Struck at the Constantinople mint (modern day Istanbul, Turkey) between the years 641 and 668. Constans II - nicknamed ‘the Bearded’ - ruled the Byzantine Empire jointly with his son Constantine IV between 654 and the formers death in 668. The obverse shows a pair of crowned facing busts: Constans II to the left with (appropriately) a long beard and Constantine IV to the right - shorter and beardless. A small cross appears between the portraits. The reverse features a tall cross potent or crutch cross, displayed on a three step plinth with the wording below for the mint of Constantinople. The full-length crowned figures of Constans and Constantine appear either side, the latter much shorter. An eye-catching high-grade gold coin at an economical price. A nice addition to any collection. Sear 964.
