Scarce Clacton de Jersey type gold Trinovantes gold Quarter Stater. Obverse: stylised horse, facing right over dot and star with geometric design on outer arc. Reverse: de Jersey type - random patterns with central annulet. The Trinovantes were a Celtic tribe that inhabited a region to the north of the Thames estuary. Sills suggests that 'Clacton de Jersey' Quarter Staters were minted by the Trinovantes after the start of the Gallic Wars (58 BC) but before Caesar's invasion of Britain in 55 BC. This example is struck in 1.78 grams of 22 carat gold with an approximate diameter of 13.5 millimetres.
