Gold proof 'Victory' 2oz coin: the second of The Royal Mint's tributes to Benedetto Pistrucci's legendary Waterloo Medal. Commissioned in the aftermath of the 1815 Battle of Waterloo, Pistrucci's masterpiece was never struck in his lifetime but is regarded as one of the most impressive medals ever designed. As part of the blockbuster Great Engravers series, The Royal Mint has struck Pistrucci's Waterloo Medal on two coins, the obverse issued in 2024 with this reverse design to be released in 2025. The engraving here focuses on the Allied military leaders, the Duke of Wellington and Field Marshal Prince Gebhard von Blücher, who fought alongside each other in the pivotal battle that brought the Napoleonic Wars to an end. This Waterloo Medal coin is from a limited edition of just 195 and comes in its original presentation packaging with a numbered certificate of authenticity enclosed.

The Battle Of Waterloo: 1815

The Battle of Waterloo was fought on 18 June 1815 in what is today Belgium. The battle marked the end of the Napoleonic Wars after decades of conflict. Allied victory redrew the map of Europe and heralded the rise of Britain as a dominant military and economic power.

Benedetto Pistruccis Waterloo Medal

British soldiers who fought at Waterloo received a campaign medal in the aftermath of the battle. For VIPs, including the Allied leaders, a commemorative medal was commissioned from an Italian artist newly employed by the Royal Mint named Benedetto Pistrucci. This spectacular medal took decades to finish and was never struck in Pistrucci's lifetime, but it is regarded by some as the finest medal ever struck in England.
