A rose gold lucky Sixpence: a beautiful bridal gift, inspired by age-old traditions.

Something Old, Something New

We all know that a bride should wear something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue on her wedding day. But do you know the final line of this Victorian rhyme?

‘Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue, and a silver sixpence in your shoe’

Sixpences have long been a symbol of good fortune. Struck since the reign of Edward VI, these silver coins were a mainstay of British coinage for centuries. Carried by brides, baked into Christmas pudding or kept in your pocket, the lucky Sixpence tradition has endured, even after these coins disappeared from circulation with decimalisation.

The First Rose Gold Sixpence

This 2021 coin represents the first time that The Royal Mint has struck a Sixpence in gold. Composed of 5.59 grams of 22 carat rose gold, this Sixpence has an attractive, pink hue thanks to the addition of a small amount of copper.

Like the Sixpences once found in your change, this gold coin measures 19.41 centimeter across and features a reverse inspired by the heritage of this iconic denomination.

The work of veteran coinage artist, John Bergdahl, the design shows a wreath of apple and orange blossoms - flowers believed to bring good luck to brides - encircling the royal cypher. It's reminiscent of the olive and oak wreath motifs found on Victorian Sixpences and the memorable national flower design, crafted by Edgar Fuller and Cecil Thomas, for the Sixpences issued earlier in Elizabeth II’s reign.
