Gold Royal Mint Sovereign, struck with a special matt finish to celebrate 200 years since the birth of Queen Victoria. Born Princess Alexandrina Victoria of Kent on 24 May 1819, Victoria was the daughter of Prince Edward, the fourth son of George III. She inherited the throne in 1837 after her father’s three elder brothers died without heirs and married her cousin, Prince Albert, in 1840. Her long reign, coloured by unprecedented technological and societal change as well as the expansion of the British Empire, is known as the Victorian era. We know a lot about her private life thanks to the detailed journals she kept as well as from her extensive correspondence, including to her many children and grandchildren who married into the royal families of Europe. Though she was only about five feet tall, Victoria projected a grand image and remained very popular through her Golden and Diamond Jubilees until she was succeeded by her Son, Edward VII, in 1901. Victoria’s legacy was celebrated in 2019 with a collection of UK coinage, issued to mark her 200th birthday. Among the sought-after commemorative releases is this ‘struck on the day’ Sovereign, struck in 7.98 grams of 22 carat (916.7) gold to the Mint’s brilliant uncirculated standard. It features Jody Clark’s portrait of Her Majesty the Queen (Victoria’s great-great granddaughter) to the obverse with the reverse showing Pistrucci’s St George and a tiny royal cypher, as used by Victoria during her reign. Just 650 of these Queen Victoria ‘strike of the day’ Sovereigns were minted on 24 May 2019 and this example comes in its original presentation packaging from The Royal Mint with a numbered certificate of authenticity enclosed.
