This coin is part of a sought-after collection issued by The Royal Mint to mark the 100th Anniversary of the First World War. WW1 was the first conflict in which aircraft played a major role in the race for superior air power, changing the history of human flight. During the conflict, the Royal Air Corps grew from a few hundred aeroplanes to an independent air arm made up of thousands of combat and support aircraft, which would, in 1918, become the Royal Air Force. This commemorative coin features a Royal Aircraft Factory R.E.8. plane, flying over the Battle of Arras in April 1917, a period known as Bloody April for the heavy losses sustained by the Royal Flying Corps. This 22-carat gold pre-owned coin is supplied in the original presentation packaging from The Royal Mint with a numbered certificate of authenticity enclosed.
