Gold proof Five Pound coin issued by the UK’s national mint to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar. Despite being outnumbered, the Royal Navy, commanded by Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson, secured a lauded victory, losing no ships and wreaking serious damage on a combined Franco-Spanish fleet, seeking to control the English Channel and clear the way for a Napoleonic invasion of Britain. Trafalgar marks the beginning of a period of British naval supremacy that would last until the Second World War and was celebrated at home with a large number of public monuments, including Nelson’s Column, in the centre of Trafalgar Square in central London. The reverse of this pre-owned commemorative coin features a design by Clive Duncan. The engraving is inspired by a painting by W L Wyllie, ‘A Panorama of the Battle of Trafalgar’. It shows Nelson’s flagship, HMS Victory and HMS Temeraire as if viewed through a telescope from a rival French ship. The obverse shows Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, the fourth definitive effigy of Her Majesty the Queen used on her coinage. Just 1,805 of these 22-carat 39.94 gram Crown coins were issued by The Royal Mint both in two-coin sets with the 2005 Nelson coin and in an individual presentation like this. This piece comes in its original presentation box with its numbered certificate of authenticity enclosed.
