Limited edition Royal Mint 22-carat gold proof 2005 Gunpowder Plot Two Pound coin. The Gunpowder Plot was a failed assassination attempt against King James I. The plotters conspired to blow up the House of Lords during the State Opening of Parliament in 1605 but were foiled by authorities and later put to death. It is an event that remains in the conscious of the United Kingdom today, commemorated every year on 5 November with Bonfire Night, also known as Guy Fawkes night after conspirator and explosives expert, Guy Fawkes. This gold proof £2 coin, struck to commemorate 400 years since the plot was uncovered, bears an edge inscription reading ‘REMEMBER, REMEMBER THE 5TH OF NOVEMBER’. Designed by Peter Forster, the reverse design is a circular arrangement of symbols of state - the mace, the crosier and sword - representing the survival of the British establishment. The circular design is also reminiscent of the popular Catherine wheel fireworks used on Bonfire Night. It is paired on the obverse with the definitive fourth effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley. Struck in 15.97 grams of 22-carat (916.7) gold, this official Royal Mint collectable coin has a bimetallic appearance, achieved with the use of red gold and yellow gold. From a limited edition of just 914, you’ll receive your Gunpowder Plot coin in its presentation packaging from The Royal Mint with a numbered certificate of authenticity enclosed.
