This 2004 gold proof Fifty Pence coin from The Royal Mint is a tribute to the late Roger Bannister, who was the first ever person to run a mile in under four minutes. He achieved this athletic feat aged 25 on the 6th May, 1954 at Iffley Road running track, which today is owned by Oxford University. With the aid of pacesetters, Bannister ran the mile circuit in a record-breaking 3:59.4. The jubilation of the crowd was so much that the official announcer of Bannister's time was drowned out by the noise after he had read out the number '3'. Incidentally, Bannister's time was broken just 46 days later and in the 65 years since, the four-minute barrier has been broken by more than 1,400 athletes. The current fastest time currently stands at 3:43.13. Not only was Bannister a talented athlete, but he was also academically gifted. He went on to become a noted neurologist and Master of Pembroke College, Oxford between 1985 and 1993. James Butler designed the 50 Pence's reverse, which shows the running legs of an athlete, set over a stopwatch that shows a time of just under four minutes. It's paired with Ian Rank Broadley portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse. This high quality gold proof edition is struck in 15.50 grams of 22 carat gold. Only 644 of these gold proof 'Running Legs' 50p coins were issued by The Royal Mint. This specimen comes in its original box of issue with the Royal Mint certificate of authenticity included.
